Trap Shooting Range Types
In this guide, you will find all of the essential information that you need on trap shooting ranges. We have all the information you need on the ranges for the different types of trap shooting and how they are set up. Keep on reading to learn about the various courses associated with trap shooting competitions.
#1 American Trap Range
In American trap, the shooting range is set up around the trap house that launches the targets. Five different shooting stations are found 16 yards behind the trap house. The five shooting positions go back to 27 yards from the trap house. The trap house will throw a target at an elevation of around 35 degrees, and the distance can be changed from 16 to 27 yards in order to increase the difficulty level as the shooter moves back. Targets are thrown at a range of 50 yards away from the shooter.
#2 Olympic Trap Range
An Olympic trap course consists of a setup almost identical to an American trap shooting range. A trap house is found 16 yards in front of several shooting positions, with the furthest you are able to shoot is 27 yards. The targets are sent around 50 yards in front of shooters, with the biggest differences being found in the trap house itself. There are several machines that send the targets in different paths than in the American trap, even though the course is similar.
#3 Double Trap Range
A double trap shooting follows the same format as an American or Olympic trap. The key difference here, just as in Olympic trap vs American trap, is found in the trap house itself and how the targets are shot. The overall course is set up the same, with five different shooting positions set behind the trap from 16 yards at the closest and 27 yards at the farthest. In double trap, two targets are released simultaneously for a single shooter to shoot. This increases the difficulty and adds to the competition.
#4 Wobble Trap Range
Because wobble trap is a variation of the American trap, it uses the same course set up. A single trap house with five shooting positions behind it at 16 to 27 yards, the difference is found in the random way that the targets are released and how they simulate a bird or other animal in flight. Targets are still thrown at a range of 50 yards away from the shooter, but because the trap oscilalate, the flight path is much more extreme and random.
